THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH

SIEMENS, NEWCASTLE

Bringing to life Siemens’ energy story at the Great Exhibition of the North

We collaborated with Siemens to increase engagement with its energy generation and storage

capabilities at the celebrated Great Exhibition of the North. Our task was to devise a creative way to

engage and educate visitors to Intu, Eldon Square, a bustling shopping centre in the centre of

Newcastle and St James’ Park – home to Newcastle United Football Club.

Our response was the ‘Ingenious Energy Challenge’, an interactive game that allowed visitors exactly

seven seconds to generate energy on a Pavegen walkway as creatively as possible. Over the course of

the event, participants skipped, walked, danced and hopped on our tech, enjoying converting their kinetic energy to electricity. The power was used to trigger a photo-pod which captured the participants’ ingenious movements as a video gif and sent this to users’ email addresses for sharing on social platforms.

Over the 12 days of activity, the estimated social media reach of the project was an impressive 70,875

people, with folks often spending upwards of five minutes enjoying the flooring system and generating

345,723 joules of energy in total.

In February, Siemens and Pavegen signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future

smart city initiatives. We look forward to collaborating with the global engineering and technology

leader on many more projects.

“Working with Pavegen to create the Ingenious Energy Challenge game for the Great Exhibition of the North was a resounding success. The stunning looking energy generating installation was a big hit with visitors to the exhibition, managing to be really fun but also telling a complex story on a technical subject in an interesting and human way. The Pavegen team was professional and hardworking and I’d be very happy to recommend them to other organizations.”

THE CHALLENGE

Pavegen has helped to convert a concrete crossing zone by the White House, Washington DC, into a sleek, attractive, and sustainable feature of a modern park.

THE SOLUTION

In a high footfall area, pedestrians can contribute to a cleaner city by giving their footstep to help power the lights of this new destination all whilst providing Washington DC Transport with valuable energy analytics.

THE IMPACT

As the tour rolled out, The Sunglass Hut were able to electrify the summer with the hottest dance parties across multiple cities, with both hashtags and images of the campaign spreading widely across social media assisting awareness for the brand. Visitors were able to physically interact with dance, music, energy and the brand, in a way that they had not ever done so before.
