Telford Sustainable Development

Telford, UK

Pioneering Sustainable Infrastructure

Telford & Wrekin Council approached Pavegen with the challenge to increase community awareness of climate change and inspire sustainable action while simultaneously providing a practical solution to a common problem - low battery on mobile phones.

The project has been funded by Telford & Wrekin Council as part of its £4m ‘On Your Side’ investment package into fighting climate change. This package is enabling several sustainability projects across the borough.

Environmental Hub

Telford and Wrekin Council invested in solar power and local air-quality monitoring to support and power their local citizens. They built a one-of-a-kind hub to encourage positive change in the community. The initiative is encouraging citizens in the community to find and develop small-scale projects that can improve their environment and promote sustainability.

Citizen engagement

Our client needed a way to communicate this impressive new initiative to their citizens and generate press coverage for the important steps they are taking towards net zero. They tasked Pavegen with creating a Citizen Engagement Experience for local residents, commuters, and visitors that would engage and educate them on the success of the initiative.

THE SOLUTION

Pavegen designed and built an eye-catching and stylish installation using strobe lights and gamification with the ‘ElectroShuffle’. The ElectroShuffle challenged visitors to use their best dance moves to generate the most real-time energy in competition with each other. Two Pavegen platforms allowed players to battle for the top spot on the leaderboard and compete for the chance to win tickets to next year’s festival.

Pathway to Sustainable Urban Evolution

Pavegen’s urban spaces design team worked with Telford & Wrekin Council to install a stretch of Pavegen kinetic energy floor tiles on the sidewalk from Telford railway station into town, which harnesses the energy of pedestrians’ footsteps.

Footsteps charge mobile phones

The energy from commuters and the wider community is converted into electricity and used to power two free mobile phone charging points located in new street furniture adjacent to the kinetic sidewalk. Pavegen supplied the kinetic energy floors along with kinetic street furniture, and a solar-powered digital screen to display sustainability messages and show the amount of energy generated by the pavement. Floor level LED strip lights were fitted either side of the kinetic sidewalk to provide instantaneous directional lighting at night.

Energising Communities, Empowering Change

The Telford & Wrekin Council's investment in the kinetic pavement project has resulted in a positive impact on the community. The public has embraced the pavement, enjoying the interactive experience of generating energy through their footsteps. The project is also contributing to raising awareness about climate change and inspiring sustainable changes in people's lives.

international media coverage raises awareness

Affectionately described as ‘The bouncy pavement’ by the BBC, the launch of the innovative kinetic walkway garnered international press coverage, with world-renowned publications like the BBC, The Guardian, The Independent, and TimeOut featuring the project's success.

The project has also led to significant community engagement, with residents supporting the launch event and utilizing the eco-hub immediately. The kinetic platform has allowed citizens to directly interact and contribute to clean energy, fostering a deeper connection with their local council on issues that matter to them.

In January 2022, the council was independently ranked in the top 3% of local authorities for climate action planning, and the latest figures show that it has reduced its operational carbon emissions by 57% since 2019.

empowering communities with engagement

Through this citizen engagement activation, Telford & Wrekin Council is promoting its commitment to sustainability and carbon-neutral goals, emphasising the usage of independent renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Pavegen is supporting the council's ambition to help fight climate change by empowering the community through the power of footsteps.
