Pavegen Partners with Broadgate to Tackle Homelessness

London's bustling Broadgate neighbourhood was the site of a powerful partnership between Pavegen and Broadgate. Emerging to address pressing issues facing the capital.

the Mission to Transform Footsteps into Positive Change

The challenge was clear: in the midst of London's vibrant energy and bustling streets, there existed a pressing need to address the stark realities of homelessness.

As one of the world's busiest cities, the sheer magnitude of foot traffic passing through Broadgate each day presented a unique opportunity—a chance to not only raise vital funds but also to shine a spotlight on the often overlooked issue of homelessness. With countless individuals navigating the streets of London, the challenge was not just about garnering attention, but about inspiring meaningful action and fostering a sense of solidarity within the community.

a new Approach to Sustainable Community Engagement

Pavegen's innovative solution? Harnessing the energy of the very footsteps that contribute to the vibrant pulse of London. By embedding smart tiles into Broadgate's pedestrian pathways, Pavegen created a citizen engagement experience like no other. Every step taken by passersby became a source of renewable energy, powering lighting applications throughout the neighbourhood.

But the impact didn't stop there. Through this collaboration, Pavegen also facilitated community donations for a local homelessness charity (Providence Row), turning each footstep into a tangible contribution towards positive change.

Through this collaboration, Pavegen catalysed a culture of giving back, seamlessly integrating philanthropy into the fabric of everyday life. By facilitating community donations, Pavegen ensured that each footstep carried with it the potential to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

Pavegen is based in King’s Cross, in the heart of London’s tech revolution. We’re just a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross and St. Pancras International Stations. Our research and development centre operates in Cambridge, the innovation hub of the country.

30,000 Steps Towards Change

The installation captured more than 30,000 footsteps triggering a £5000 donation to homelessness charity Providence Row.

The activation sparked meaningful conversations and inspired action among residents and visitors alike. More than just generating electricity, Pavegen empowered people to make a difference in their community in a tangible and meaningful way. By simply walking through Broadgate, individuals were able to connect with their surroundings, giving back to those in need and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

This partnership between Pavegen and Broadgate serves as a powerful example of how technology, innovation, and community collaboration can come together to address complex social issues. Through their combined efforts, they have not only illuminated the streets of London but also illuminated the path towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
