How Pavegen and Uber Engaged pub goers with Kinetic Innovation

The Sustainability Challenge

As part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability, Uber sought a fresh, engaging way to raise awareness of their electrification efforts and highlight the reduction of carbon emissions in London. They wanted to celebrate the achievement of preventing 55,000 tonnes of air pollution since 2021, while encouraging further adoption of electric vehicles. Uber needed an activation that would not only drive press coverage but also connect with the public in a tangible, memorable way—demonstrating how everyday actions contribute to a greener future.

Enter Jubba, the creative events agency tasked with delivering a unique experience that could amplify Uber’s message. Their vision was to create an immersive, interactive event that embodied the spirit of sustainability while engaging the public. That’s where Pavegen came in.

THE SOLUTION

Pavegen designed and built an eye-catching and stylish installation using strobe lights and gamification with the ‘ElectroShuffle’. The ElectroShuffle challenged visitors to use their best dance moves to generate the most real-time energy in competition with each other. Two Pavegen platforms allowed players to battle for the top spot on the leaderboard and compete for the chance to win tickets to next year’s festival.

The Kinetic Solution

Working closely with Jubba, we at Pavegen were brought in to provide an innovative solution that would make Uber’s sustainability story come alive. Our kinetic flooring technology, which transforms footsteps into electrical energy, was the perfect fit for this activation. We designed an interactive, three-day pop-up event at the well-established Speaker pub in Westminster and transformed it in to the "55k Tonnes" pub from 7th-9th October.

The concept? Challenge pub-goers to generate energy with every step they take while enjoying their time at the pub. As they walked across the Pavegen floor, their footsteps were converted into renewable energy, which was then tracked over the course of the activation. This allowed the public to see firsthand how their small, everyday actions could power the future.

Physical Installation: The centrepiece of the setup was a 2 generator Pavegen activation with an interactive display totem.

Digital Experience: We developed a simple and effective way to engage pub goers in the act of renewable energy generation with footsteps while raising awareness of the key brand messages of Uber.

Public Engagement a Hit with pub goers

The activation served as a tangible demonstration of sustainability in action, allowing consumers to physically participate in Uber’s lower-carbon journey. The partnership not only helped Uber tell their electrification story but also made the public a part of it, turning awareness into action.

The three-day activation was a success on multiple fronts:

Public Engagement: Pub-goers actively participated in generating energy, with a significant number contributing to the overall energy totals tracked during the event. This hands-on experience sparked conversations around sustainability and how individual actions can drive change.

Brand Impact: Uber’s sustainability message was brought to life in a way that was both innovative and immersive, helping to raise awareness of their 55,000 tonnes milestone and the company’s ongoing efforts to electrify its vehicle fleet.

Press Coverage: The unique combination of Pavegen’s technology and Uber’s sustainability goals created a buzz that extended beyond the pub, drawing attention from media outlets and helping to drive press coverage that positioned Uber as a leader in green technology.

By partnering with Jubba and Uber, we helped turn a sustainability message into an interactive public experience that not only generated renewable energy but also generated excitement, awareness, and engagement.

Paving the Way for Future Activations

Our partnership with Jubba on this project showcases the power of collaboration in creating meaningful, memorable brand activations. Through innovative technology and a well-executed concept, we were able to help Uber connect with consumers in a way that resonated long after they left the event.

Pavegen’s kinetic flooring continues to prove itself as an impactful tool for brands looking to engage with the public on sustainability issues. The success of this activation highlights the potential for more innovative partnerships, where everyday actions can make a real difference.
