ENGAGE COMMUTERS GENERATE CLEAN-ENERGY SHOWCASE SUSTAINABILITY

THE CHALLENGE

The Department for Transport, through the £22.9m ADEPT Smart Places Live Labs Programme challenged the Transport industry in the U.K to find more innovative ways to engage local commuters while showcasing a commitment to sustainability. Central Bedfordshire Council rose to the challenge.

Giles Perkins, Live Labs Programme Director said “The untapped footfall energy at our transport hubs represents a real opportunity to provide sustainable energy sources to power bespoke applications, while engaging audiences and encouraging behavioural change.

THE SOLUTION

After long deliberation with the Pavegen team, Central Bedfordshire came up with an innovative way to use our unique tech.

Two clean electricity generating walkways that help to power a data screen & display monitor, and two USB charging benches for commuters by the station entrance. The collaborative space provides the opportunity for visitors to engage directly with sustainability every time they exit and enter the station. The project was a joint venture between ADEPT, West Midlands Railway, Central Bedfordshire Council and Leighton Buzzard train station with Pavegen is providing the technology.

The monitor can be used to display the amount of electricity generated with each step, inspiring people to consider their actions and to host messages that are more captivating due to the nature in which they are triggered.

THE IMPACT

The project is helping to raise awareness for sustainability and incentivising a stronger community through shared, participation-led experiences. Commuters are learning about key electricity generation, the importance of sustainability, how their council and the Department for Transport are doing their bit as well as providing a platform for sharing important messages and communications. Furthermore, Pavegen and Central Bedfordshire Council are working on ways to create other ways of enhancing public messaging and educating commuters.
