Engaging Citizens in the Future of London’s Built Environment

Have Your Say at NLA with Pavegen

New London Architecture (NLA), a think tank focused on London's built environment, wanted to find a way to engage Londoners in discussions about the future of the city's urban landscape. Their aim was to create an interactive and memorable platform where visitors could share their thoughts while also contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

THE SOLUTION

Pavegen designed and built an eye-catching and stylish installation using strobe lights and gamification with the ‘ElectroShuffle’. The ElectroShuffle challenged visitors to use their best dance moves to generate the most real-time energy in competition with each other. Two Pavegen platforms allowed players to battle for the top spot on the leaderboard and compete for the chance to win tickets to next year’s festival.

Advancing Data-Driven Urban Planning

Pavegen partnered with NLA to develop an innovative, energy-generating citizen engagement platform. The installation invited visitors to participate in shaping the future of London’s built environment by “having their say” with their footsteps. By stepping on the Pavegen tiles, visitors would generate clean energy and answer questions posed by NLA.

Pavegen’s new analytics model and software voting mechanic was piloted as part of the installation, capturing advanced data that provided valuable insights for NLA. This data allowed NLA to continue conversations with participants, fostering ongoing engagement and extending the lifetime value of the interaction.

A New Era of Urban Engagement

Citizen Participation: The Pavegen installation enabled hundreds of visitors to voice their opinions on the future of London’s built environment in a fun and meaningful way, using their footsteps to power their responses.

Energy Generation: Each footstep not only engaged citizens but also contributed to generating off-grid electricity, showcasing the potential of renewable energy in urban spaces.

Advanced Data Collection: Through Pavegen’s cutting-edge analytics software, NLA gathered detailed insights into citizen preferences and behavior. This data can be leveraged for future urban planning and development initiatives.

Ongoing Engagement: The analytics model enables NLA to extend the conversation beyond the event, maintaining engagement with participants and using the data for more targeted future outreach.
