Powering Engagement at Energy Plaza Visitor Experience

Meet Stadtwerke Stuttgart, the municipal energy provider dedicated to making the energy transition a reality for their residents. With their latest initiative, Energy Plaza, they’ve created an interactive hub where visitors can experience renewable energy firsthand.

Before creating Energy Plaza, Stadtwerke Stuttgart wanted a way to connect with visitors on a deeper level. They weren’t just looking to educate; they wanted every person who walked through the doors to feel their commitment to sustainability.

Energy Plaza is now a hands-on innovation centre designed to inspire and educate. Here, people can engage with solar power simulations, explore electric mobility solutions, and now, thanks to Pavegen, generate electricity simply by walking.

Bringing Energy to Life with Pavegen

Denis Voigt, Head of Energy Services and Sales at Stadtwerke Stuttgart, saw a challenge: how do you make energy transformation something people can truly feel?

Traditional exhibits weren’t enough. The Energy Plaza team wanted visitors to do more than just read about sustainability. They wanted them to experience it.

Enter Pavegen.

With Pavegen’s kinetic flooring technology, visitors have the opportunity to physically engage with renewable energy. The installation at Energy Plaza features a bespoke energy gameplay activation to challenge each visitor to take part in their own energy generation story. Making the invisible power of movement both tangible and exciting.

THE SOLUTION

Pavegen designed and built an eye-catching and stylish installation using strobe lights and gamification with the ‘ElectroShuffle’. The ElectroShuffle challenged visitors to use their best dance moves to generate the most real-time energy in competition with each other. Two Pavegen platforms allowed players to battle for the top spot on the leaderboard and compete for the chance to win tickets to next year’s festival.

Why Stadtwerke Stuttgart Chose Pavegen

  • Interactive engagement: Through a gamified experience, visitors don’t just learn about renewable energy; they create it through immersive gameplay.
  • Real-time data: Rich data insights provide a picture of individual sustainability contributions, showing how much electricity each step produces, making the energy transition personal.
  • Sustainability in action: The installation aligns perfectly with the Energy Plaza’s mission of making clean energy accessible and inspiring.

Bringing Sustainability to Life

The key word is experience and no one understands this better than Alexandra Lang, a member of the four-person team that welcomes visitors at Energy Plaza’s reception. “The people who come to us have many different wishes,” she explains. “But everyone is excited that there aren't just bare numbers or brochures here, but rather a hands-on world of energy.”

With Pavegen, visitors don’t just hear about sustainability. They feel it with every step they take, turning an abstract concept into something real and immediate.

A New Era of Urban Engagement

Since its installation, the Pavegen system has quickly become one of Energy Plaza’s standout attractions. Visitors of all ages, from students to industry professionals, are stepping onto the tiles and watching their footsteps generate real power whilst learning about the brand values, sustainability and net zero intent of Stadtwerke Stuttgart.

Here’s the impact in numbers:

  • Visitor engagement time increased by 30 seconds per person
  •
  • The Pavegen tiles have become a conversation starter, sparking discussions about energy, technology, and sustainability in a way that static displays never could.
  •
  • Hundreds of visitors have interacted with the installation since the opening of activation.

“Visitors love the interactive experience that Pavegen brings to the Energy Plaza,” says Denis Voigt. “It makes energy generation tangible and fun, helping us inspire people about the possibilities of renewable energy.”

Looking Ahead

With Pavegen, Stadtwerke Stuttgart has transformed the way people connect with clean energy. By turning movement into power, they’ve made sustainability something everyone can participate in, one step at a time.

The Energy Plaza is setting new standards for energy education, and with innovations like Pavegen, the future of interactive sustainability is just getting started.
