Sydney Commuters Step into the Future with Pavegen's Innovative Energy-Generating Technology

PRESS RELEASE - Sydney, Australia, 15 November 2024

Transforming Public Transit with Sustainability and Engagement at Central Railway Station.

Sydney, Australia – In a groundbreaking move to champion sustainability, Transport for New South Wales (NSW) has partnered with Pavegen to unveil an energy-generating installation at Central Railway Station—one of the busiest transport hubs in the Southern Hemisphere.

This first-of-its-kind project in Australia highlights the state’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into public infrastructure. With over 270,000 passengers passing through daily, Central Railway Station demonstrates how innovative technologies like Pavegen can generate off-grid electricity in urban environments.

Harnessing the Power of Every Step

The installation features an 8.14-square-meter array of Pavegen’s cutting-edge kinetic energy tiles, strategically placed in a high-traffic area of the station. Each footstep on the tiles generates renewable electricity, which helps power an eye-catching digital display. This off-grid system showcases real-time data on footfall and energy generation, emphasising how movement can create tangible, sustainable energy.

Reliable, Renewable, Ready for the Future

“Every step taken on Pavegen tiles directly contributes to clean, off-grid energy,” said Laurence Kemball-Cook, CEO of Pavegen. “This installation is a tangible demonstration of how small actions can collectively power meaningful change. The system is designed to work independently of the grid, providing energy in real time where it’s needed.”

Sustainability in Action

Transport for NSW’s adoption of Pavegen technology reflects a bold commitment to embedding renewable energy into everyday spaces. The tiles not only provide off-grid power but serve as a practical example of how transit hubs can evolve to meet modern energy challenges.

“This is a powerful example of using innovative technology to improve public infrastructure,” said Kemball-Cook. “By integrating Pavegen, Transport for NSW is reducing its reliance on traditional energy sources for off-grid applications while showcasing a forward-thinking approach to sustainability.”

A Model for Urban Sustainability

The Central Railway Station installation signals a significant step forward in how cities can incorporate renewable technologies into their infrastructure. It also hints at the potential of Pavegen’s next-generation solutions, such as the Solar+ tiles, which will combine kinetic and solar energy for even greater renewable energy output—perfectly suited to regions like Australia with abundant sunlight.

Leading the Way with Renewable Innovation

This installation underscores that renewable energy from human movement isn’t just a distant goal—it’s happening now, one step at a time. With each footfall, commuters contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future, proving that innovation can be practical, scalable, and impactful.
