ENHANCING ENGAGEMENT & SUSTAINABILITY IN PUBLIC TRANSIT

Central Railway Station, Sydney, Australia

15th nov 2024

Transport for New South Wales (NSW), the government agency responsible for managing the Australian state’s transport systems, faced a dual challenge of engaging commuters while needing to promote sustainability.

Central Railway Station in Sydney, one of the busiest transport hubs in the Southern Hemisphere, sees over 270,000 passengers daily. Transport for NSW sought an innovative solution to demonstrate their commitment to clean energy and community engagement, all while enhancing the commuter experience in a bustling, high-traffic environment.

Pavegen's Energy Generating Footfall Technology

Pavegen partnered with Transport for NSW to install an 8.14-square-meter array of energy-generating tiles in the heart of the Central Railway Station. Each step on these tiles converts kinetic energy into renewable electricity, which powers a dynamic digital display. This screen visualises real-time data, showcasing the number of footsteps taken by commuters and the energy generated.

The installation creates an interactive, educational experience, inviting commuters to actively participate in the station’s sustainability goals. The Pavegen tiles—engineered for high footfall locations—blend seamlessly with the station’s design, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal while serving as a tangible representation of Transport for NSW’s forward-thinking ethos.

A Step Towards a Greener Future in New South Wales

Since its installation, the Pavegen system has transformed Central Railway Station into a living example of sustainability in action. Commuters are now more aware of their role in supporting renewable energy, thanks to the captivating data display. Thousands of steps taken on the tiles each day collectively generate clean energy, helping to power the display and inspire conversations about green innovation.

The project has positioned Transport for NSW as a leader in integrating sustainability with public infrastructure, creating a benchmark for transport hubs worldwide. Feedback from commuters highlights the excitement and pride in participating in this eco-friendly initiative.

The Central Railway Station installation is proof that every step can lead to a more sustainable future. With Pavegen’s innovative technology, Transport for NSW has taken a bold stride toward engaging its community while showcasing the power of renewable energy in action.
